Letting Your Temper Win

Summary:
Suggestions for keeping control of your temper.
Details or Sample:
Keeping your voice and demeanor under control is not the easiest thing in the world to do, but it is substantially helpful in keeping a leash on your temper. This is not to say that you can become not angry simply by keeping quiet, but that the control of your voice, maintaining a speaking volume and level tone can help you to keep control of yourself. It might also lead the other person to leaving you alone. If they cannot seem to get a rise out of you, they often stop trying. Your boss might also appreciate that you are not to be taken for granted when you explain to him that your previous plans cannot be changed for him in a firm but pleasant voice.

Avoid calling the frustrating person names. Using terms such as "jerk" will mentally make that person into an enemy figure. This makes it more difficult for you to feel any empathy, to understand his position. That understanding is one of the best emotional antidotes to anger.

Think about what the real issue is when you begin feeling your temper rise. Often, being able to deal with the actual issue, rather than giving in to your anger, will lead to a swift resolution. A simple request or action can make a mountain back into a mole-hill. If your wife infuriates you by buying something expensive without consulting you, request a promise that she will ask you before spending that kind of money. This is into a control issue, but one of being kept in the loop about shared finances.
