On Hold – A Thought on Time Management and Patience

Summary:
A suggestion of how to improve productivity while sitting on hold. There´s so much you can do!
Details or Sample:
When you know you are likely to be put on hold, as when calling your bank’s customer support line, or trying to get technical support for a computer program, or when calling a government office for anything, be prepared. Have a crossword puzzle handy, a nail file, or have your email waiting for you. It’s amazing what can be accomplished in two or three minutes. That only sounds like an infinitesimal amount of time – in reality, its 120 or more seconds. That’s a lot of maneuvering room on the cosmic wheel.

Time yourself when taking a quick trip to the bathroom. How long does it take to feed your cat (not counting petting time)? How long does it really take to check the oil in your car, or to grab the mail out of your mail-box and scan all the return addresses? Not long for most people, often less than three minutes if you are not distracted by something else along the way. The distractions are what make so many simple actions take what seems like an eternity.

Being on hold is a state of mind that everyone reacts to a little differently. You can allow yourself to become upset and fidget and make your blood-pressure rise, get agitated for no good reason. Or you can think ahead and become one of those people who uses their time on hold wisely: increasing productivity, remaining calm and making the world a much nicer place to be.
