Flower Care Help
Now that the winter season is almost over, it’s time to plan for your garden! Whether you are a veteran with a proverbial green thumb, or a more inexperienced gardener, this easy guide for flower care do’s and don’ts will ensure beautiful, healthy flowers for the spring season.

DO
Do your research. Find our what local providers sell healthy flowers. Many huge retailers have adjacent greenhouses, but make sure you study the plants closely. Check for blooms with firm petals and vibrant colors. Check for any telltale holes, which might have been caused by a hungry insect. Your safest bet is to seek out a professional florist who is knowledgeable about their plants.
Once you have made your purchase, make sure the florist wraps your flowers to protect them during the car ride home. If the flowers must be kept out of water during their transition, ask your florist to cover the stem tips with damp paper towels.
Remember: your flowers need more than sunlight and water to flourish! This is why going to a professional florist is beneficial. While purchasing your flowers, ask the florist to cut flower food. Sometimes this is a free service, but it’s worth the additional purchase if it is not already provided for you. Flower food protects your flowers from bacteria, creates beautiful, healthy-looking buds, provides flowers with the energy to bloom, and prolongs your flowers’ lives.
Once your bulbs are in the ground, you should water them with lukewarm water. In lukewarm water, there is less oxygen, which prevents air bubbles from getting in your flowers’ stems and blocking the uptake of water. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, and this is why it helps to consult a professional florist. Ask your florist if your bulb selections prefer lukewarm or cold water. Some flowers, such as tulips and daffodils, prefer cold water.
Live in an apartment? Not all people have the luxury of owning their own yards, but there’s no reason you can’t bring the beauty of the outside, inside! Purchase flowers for your living room or kitchen, but make sure you carefully clean any vases. Bacteria cuts the lifespan of flowers dramatically. Follow these steps from the Flowers & Plants Association for the care of your cut flowers:
1. Make sure vases are very clean
2. Use fresh lukewarm water with commercial cut flower food added.
3. Strip all leaves below the water level.
4. Take at least 3cm (1“) off all stems, making a slanted cut with a sharp knife or very sharp scissors.
5. Avoid direct sunlight, heat, or draughts which can shorten flowers\\\\\\\' lives.
6. Keep flowers away from fruit and remove faded flowers as they occur.
7. Top up the water regularly and add flower food in proportion.
Before you place the flowers in your vase, cut the stems at an angle. Cutting gives the stem a larger area to drink water through, and the cut angle prevents the stem from adhering to the bottom of the vase, which makes water uptake difficult.
Just follow these simple Do’s steps and your flowers will live long, happy lives!
