Fascinating Facts: Winter Holidays

Did you know that in 1856 President Franklin Pierce was the first White House resident to install a Christmas tree? And did you know that President Theodore Roosevelt would not allow a fresh-cut pine Christmas tree in the White House? Its true! Teddy was quite the environmentalist and thought that cutting down a tree to display for only a few weeks was a dreadful idea.

These are only two one of many Winter Holiday facts presented herein:

* Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer is one of our less-than-ancient holiday characters. Rudolph was invented in 1939 by Robert May to be included in retailer Montgomery Wards winter catalogue that year.

* The first US ambassador to Mexico was John Poinsett. So what, you ask? Mr Poinsett was also the developer of the traditional holiday flower, the Poinsettia. Mexicans have, ever since, touted the poinsettia flower as the traditional Christmas Ever flower.

* Up until the 1860s, Santa Claus was a thin, rather gaunt character. In the early 1860s artist Charles Nast redepicted Saint Nick for Harpers Bazaar magazine as the rotund, jolly old elf we know and love today. In the first Harpers cartoon, Santa was shown visiting Civil War soldiers on both sides. Probably the first totally commercial rendering of Claus was by the Coca-Cola company who reinvented Santa yet again in 1931 to represent Coke© as a winter as well as summer beverage. This campaign fattened up Santa Claus considerably....
