A Guide to Recognizing Email Scams.

Summary:
Recent reports indicate that millions are still being lost due to email scams and the criminals behind them. The only way to beat these is to educate oneself on the content of some of the more common emails sent to unsuspecting recipients.
Details or Sample:
Greetings respected one! I am writing this article in God"s name with the heartfelt wish that fewer people are scammed out of their hard-earned money via fraudulent emails, each claiming anything from a share of a foreign fortune and too-good-to-be-true job offers to suspect investment opportunities. But how can you spot these scams and send them to where they belong, the recycle bin? Well, lesson one is if the email starts in a similar way to the first line of this paragraph, then alarm bells should start ringing!

To ensure you do not become a victim of Internet fraud, it is important to at first educate yourself in the most common stories that are used by the fraudsters. The most well-known (but still one of the most profitable for the criminals) is the advance fee fraud, also known as the Nigerian or "419" scam. These can come in the form of the traditional "foreign fortune" story, an email announcing a lottery win or the offer of a rare or unavailable product. All of these are essentially the same thing; there is something somewhere that could be yours if you respond and do exactly what you are told.

Time to Pay Up.

Unfortunately the road you will travel to get to your fortune will be a long and expensive one. Fees for lawyers and taxes, bribes for officials and money release payments are just some of the unforeseen expenses you will have to cough up to your new friends before you can get your hands on your prize, which of course, doesn"t really exist. The criminal knows that once you have paid for one thing, you are gullible enough to pay for anything he tells you and will happily take every penny you have, all the while promising you that every payment will always be the "last one".

But millions in an African bank is not the only con trick out there. A less common, but equally expensive scam is known as wash-wash, where you will be offered a share from a stack of ink-stained cash, however, once hooked you will find that the special agent to remove the stains is surprisingly expensive.

Working from Home.

Have you ever been offered a job that involves cashing checks for foreign investors? Did you think it was a scam but couldn"t see how the scammers would make money? Well, it"s simple really. You become an agent and start getting checks in the post which you pay into the bank and take a cut as your fee. You then withdraw the remaining funds and transfer them to your employer"s bank. What happens is this, the checks are fake and this is not always noticed when you pay it in, but due to the banking system, you can still transfer money out of the account. When the bank realizes it is a fake check, you will become liable for the real money the bank transferred at your request; real money that the scammer has long since run off with.

As if these were not enough, watch out for any emails claiming to be from someone (whom you do not know) in need or a foreign woman (usually from Russia or an Eastern European country) looking for a "soul mate", as these will have the same outcome as any advance fee fraud i.e. you will be paying for travel documents, hospital bills and medical expenses, laptops, rent and food. Only you won"t be of course, you will just be lining the pockets of a criminal.
