Bringing Home Bunny: What to Get for Your New Pet Rabbit

Summary:
This article discusses the recommended basic items to purchase when one makes the wonderful decision to choose a rabbit as a pet.
Details or Sample:
As most people tend to choose dogs or cats as pets, everyone is fairly familiar with doggy bones and tug-of-war toys. However, there can be some questions as to what types of goodies one should buy for a pet rabbit. Mostly, it is trial and error. Although most rabbits like the same things, what makes one bunny turn circles, won't even elicit a blink from another. As time goes on and you and your bunny get to know each other better, you will be able to discern precisely which types of treats your pal will enjoy. Here are some basic items to get for your new pet.

You will of course need a cage, a waterbottle and a feeding dish or bin for your new bunny rabbit. While some feel that rabbit pellets are enough for feeding their pet, some people prefer to supplement bits of hay for their bunny. One thing's for sure, if you decide to supplement hay, your rabbit won't turn it down! Rabbits love the stuff! You may also choose to get your bunny a litterbox for litterbox training. (Yes, it is totally possible to litter train a rabbit!) Finding yourself a good book on rabbit care can tell you how to do this. A book will also be good for accessing information on behaviors or in case you need to quickly address issues on first aid.

By nature, rabbits are curious creatures, so they must be given much to do and plenty of space to roam and explore their surroundings. The number one thing to remember about rabbits is that they are 'chewers'! Rabbits chew- on anything- to keep their front teeth filed down. So, not only is it important to rabbit proof your home and make it safe for them by tying up electrical cords and putting up plants that could make them sick, you must give them something safe to chew on! You can find a variety of chew toys for rabbits at local pet shops. Most likely, it will be made of a wood that will be safe for rabbits to chew on. Never allow your rabbit to chew on wood furniture or pressure treated wood! Not only does it hurt the look of your furniture or deck, rabbits are very sensitive to chemicals and it is very easy to make them sick.

Another good idea for your bunny is cardboard tubes. These can also be found at your local pet store. They are big enough for bunny to lounge in and safe enough to chew on. Rabbits are burrowing animals, so they like to do things that remind them of being in a burrow.
