Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love
|
Summary:
A short history of the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, including a famous legend about her. |
Details or Sample:
Aphrodite, as many people know, is the goddess of beauty, love and reproduction. She was allegedly born from the sea foam (aphros means sea foam) that was caused by the castration of Uranus by his son, and was washed ashore at Cyprus or Cythera. She is attributed to dolphins, doves, swans, the pomegranate tree and the lime tree.
Aphrodite was quickly married off to Hephaestus (the smith god) by Zeus, who was afraid that the God"s would fight over her. Hephaestus crafted a beautiful magic girdle for Aphrodite, but unfortunately for him this only increased her irresistibility and she had many lovers. Aphrodite is subsequently the mother of many prominent Greek figures, including Aeneas and Eros.
As one famous legend goes, Aphrodite caused Smyrna, the daughter of the king of Cyprus, to fall in love with and fall pregnant to, her own father. When the king realized what had happened he went to attack his daughter, but as he did so, Aphrodite turned Smyrna into a tree and when the blade struck the tree, out fell baby Adonis.
