Recently, I heard a familiar rattling call that always reminds me of the clicking noise of a stick being drawn over the slats in a wooden fence. I knew right away that there must be a belted kingfisher in my backyard. It´s one of my favorite birds. It is unique in sound and appearance. With its long thick bill, this medium sized bird is hard to miss and easy to identify.

It is also distinctive in its coloration. The belted kingfisher is blue gray on its head and upper parts with white underneath and a white collar around its neck. There is a blue gray band across the chest. Usually, male birds are more colorful than the female. But that is not so with the belted kingfisher. Females have an additional chest band that is a reddish color just below the blue gray chest band and under the wings. But, to me, the crowning glory of this bird is its crown. An unruly crown of long feathers adorns its large head. I affectionately refer to it as the bird with the wild hairdo.
