On the Hunt: Dating Tactics of the Wingman

Summary:
This article discusses the tactics of the wingman, basically a buddy system ploy to help pick up dates. But does it really work?
Details or Sample:
Back in the day, when men used to actually court women, a man who saw a pretty girl in a bar would quietly order a drink and have the bartender deliver it to her. The bartender would then indicate to the woman where the nice gentleman was sitting so that the she could hold the drink up and mouth the words, "Thank you".

Times have changed.

Now, if you"ve ever been to a club or had a ladies-night-out on the town, you know him- the pick up artist. And his wingman. Two guys who make their way through the club looking for "the target". The target is the hot chick the pick-up artist wants to hook up with for the evening- but more than likely she has a friend that has accompanied her. So what to do?

Enter: the wingman. He"s the guy who will mosey up to you (the target) and start a conversation that mentions his buddy the fighter pilot who just got done flying a dangerous mission in Iraq; or maybe his best friend the transplant surgeon who just saved the life of a baby girl born with a rare liver disease in some far off African village. It doesn"t matter. As a wingman, it"s his duty to make his friend sound like a God before introducing him to you. The wingman then keeps your friend busy, buying her a drink or asking her to dance while you chat it up with Mr. "Fighter pilot/surgeon". Sometimes, the tactic is for the wingman to chat up your friend first- and just when you start to feel really ignored, (duh-duh-duh-DUN!) the pick-up artist comes to the rescue!

The handsome (but not overly handsome) wingman plays second fiddle to his buddy throughout the evening, keeping the conversation going, always making his buddy look like a genius, never saying anything that might embarrass him or make things uncomfortable. And never, never does he make a move on the target. The wingman"s attention is on the friend whether the attraction is genuine or not. They watch each other for pre-arranged signals and/or give verbal cues that show whether the transaction is going in the right or wrong direction or perhaps even a signal for when the wingman is actually interested in the friend; and of course there"s a signal for when it"s time to leave with their "dates". The main goal for these two is the same: getting the pick up artist lucky. If it happens, they switch. The next time out, the pick up artist becomes the wingman and wingman gets to fly up front. The two live vicariously through each other"s exploits.
