The city of Karatsu sits on the shores of the Genkai Sea in Saga Prefecture on the island of Kyushu the southern most of the Japanese home Islands. Karatsu is a resort city well known for its perfect beaches and other local attractions for visitors including numerous spas and hot springs.

Beside the observation deck is a small statue of a young woman in traditional garb. She is Princess Sayo and a small plaque tells of her story.

Many years past this young woman, or so the legend says, fell in love with a simple but dashing soldier. As soldiers are often wont to do he sailed off across the seas to take part in a war on distance shores. After their tearful farewell the Princess climbed to the top of the mountain to this very spot to watch his ship sail away. Here she remained awaiting his return.

As is often the case in such he failed to return and the heartbroken Princess continued her solitary vigil until she turned to stone.
