Film Review - Over the Hedge

Summary:
Over the Hedge is another in a long line of fun and fantastic animated films that are just as entertaining for parents as they are for their children. Heres a film review and plot summary of this blockbuster of the summer of 2006!
Details or Sample:
RJ (Bruce Willis) is a greedy raccoon who gets himself into trouble when he tries to take Vincent´s (Nick Nolte) stash of goodies. Vincent will spare RJ´s life if the raccoon can get all of his stuff back including a little red wagon, a blue cooler and enough junk food to keep a bunch of teenagers happy for an entire summer vacation. RJ has to do this by the full moon IN LESS THAN A WEEK!

RJ´s desperate and lands in - of all places - suburbia. He meets up with Verne (Garry Shandling), a sensitive turtle who is the leader of a rag-tag gang of forest foragers which includes Hammy the Squirrel (Steve Carrell), Stella the Skunk (Wanda Sykes), Ozzie (William Shatner) and Heather (Avril Lavigne) the possums and a family of porcupines headed up by Lou (Eugene Levy) and Penny (Catherine O´Hara). Verne and his "family´ need to gear up for the winter. It´s only 247 days away. They don´t want to starve and are very concerned when they discover that their forest has been cut down to almost nothing during their hibernation period to make way for a housing development.

RJ steps in to calm the animals down. He offers them human food and provides a taste of the junk-food life in the form of nacho-cheese chips which the animals really seem to enjoy. All except for Verne who´s tail is tingling. He knows something isn´t right, but will anyone listen to the voice of reason? Of course not.

RJ becomes everybody but Verne´s best bud and starts sending the animals "over the hedge" to find food, fun and a bit of danger. In only a few short days, the animals have filled up their log with junk foods that humans indulge in such as cookies, which are delivered by Girl-Scout types using a red wagon and pizza, potato chips, soda and so much more.

The humans are not happy with this intrusion, especially not the dictatorial president of the homeowners´ association, Gladys (Allison Janey). Gladys wastes little time hiring an exterminator. The animals´ lives are in danger, but RJ only cares about saving his own hide. He does appear to soften after the "family´ creates a haven for him, complete with comfy chair, remote control and television set.

RJ´s warm and fuzzy feelings don´t last long. He still plans on taking the food and goodies that the others worked so hard - and risked their lives - to get. He tries to bring them to Vincent so he can get the bear off his back, but Verne has other plans. Verne believes that if he can return the goodies to the humans they won´t be so angry with the animals and may call off the exterminator. Verne doesn´t want his family and friends to die.

--------------------------------------
Sure, "Over the Hedge" can be formulaic. The plot is highly predictable; the ending is very happy - even the skunk finds a cat with no sense of smell to share her life with! However, that doesn´t mean that film is without merit. "Over the Hedge" is fun and funny. It´s a true delight for parent and child alike. Steve Carrell as Hammy and William Shatner as Ozzie the possum single parent are hysterical. The movie is part satire, totally comical and extremely well-done. The dialogue is intelligent without being gross. The characters are well-developed and extremely likeable. And the animation is very cool!

"Over the Hedge" is a can´t-miss romp through the forest and the urban jungle that will leave you begging for more.
