And if a child gets only one sunburn in their youth that results in blisters, their chances of developing melanoma (skin cancer) later on will more than double -- only eleven minutes in the sun is enough to damage their skin forever! But by following the tips listed below, you can protect your baby from harmful ultraviolet rays.

Use a sun block especially made for children. These are usually stronger, they have higher SPFs than normal, and are also longer-lasting. Try to use sun block that contains zinc or titanium since babies will absorb fewer chemicals into their bodies from these. Don"t worry if it doesn"t rub in all the way or if you can see white film on your baby"s skin. That only means they are being protected well. And don"t forget to put sun block on the most neglected areas: the tops of their feet and shins which protrude from strollers and are susceptible to sunburn, and also their ears. You should reapply sun block every two hours. Some brands quickly lose their protection value after being in the sunlight, so try to find one that is especially long-lasting.

Newborns should be kept entirely out of the sun for the first six months, or until a pediatrician says they are able to use sun block.
