Has Stress Become an Epidemic?

Summary:
This article looks into the personality traits associated with stress and why some people experience stress more than others.
Details or Sample:
The last seven monthly issues of a popular ladies magazine included stress in cover stories. In fact 10 issues of this magazine have covered stress since June of 2005. This stirred me to question just how bad the issue of stress has gotten. Are we in an epidemic of stress? What are the deep rooted causes of stress? We live in a society that seems to be on the constant look-out for ways to de-stress, but the issue keeps popping up. A Google search for the keyword "stress" led to well over 300,000,000 results.

We should begin by defining the psychological causes of stress and its physiological effects and root out some underlying causes of this plague.

Research suggests that our personality type has a lot to do with the types of stress that affect us as well as how we deal with stress. There are many personality types that can lead to the inner causes of stress.
Selfishness is our instinct for survival and is a natural expression but too much self-interest can make our lives empty by causing us to alienate ourselves from others. We need to become less selfish and more considerate of others. Selfish people tend to be easily offended which can lead to stress.

Self-importance is another one of our ego traits that can lead to stress by thinking the world should revolve around us. It is a form of self defense to insist that we are always right. By learning to overcome selfishness and self-importance we can avoid unnecessary stress in our lives.

Self-centeredness, pride and vanity are other leading causes of self-induced stress. A person who is self-centered can be very generous with friends, family and even strangers but they want to be the center of attention. When this person doesn't get this attention they become frustrated which leads to stress.

Pride is a form of self importance and boasting of one's own achievements is an indication of superficiality. People who are confident of their own worth do not need to boast but for those who are full of pride this usually indicates an underlying superior complex which can lead to stress.

Vanity is one of those personality traits that can cause a lot of stress and unhappiness. When we want to be noticed because we think we are prettier than others and want to be praised for it this can lead to great unhappiness which causes stress.
