The PS3 Story So Far.
By Matt Jackson
The release of the XBox 360 saw two major occurrences in the gaming community. Not only was it the introduction of the first next generation console but it also meant that gamers from around the world began to demand more information from Sony regarding the release of their own system - the PS3. As the demand for information rose and the supply of anything concrete remained fairly stagnant, it was inevitable that rumors would begin to circulate regarding virtually every aspect of the system. Some turned out to be true, more turned out to be complete rubbish but one thing was for sure, Sony had to release information before the world was whipped into a complete frenzy.
The 15th March marked a historical day in the story of the PS3. For reasons known only to Sony, a hurried press conference was called. Chaired by Ken Kutaragi of Sony, the press conference was supposed to relieve fears in the gaming industry and provide the general public with some information. While there was firm data, the conference seemed to do little to allay many fears and further rumors were conjured by the news that ensued. However, in the passing days many of the details have been ironed out to the relief of press, gamers, game producers and possibly Sony too. Here is how the news breaks down so far:
PS3 Release Date - Pre 15th March Rumors.
The biggest question on everybody´s lips surrounded the release date of the system itself and, true to form, a majority of the rumors also centered on these details. Articles appeared in the press wildly speculating proposed dates and despite the lack of any firm date, "official" announcements of PS3 delays were also released.
You could virtually pick a date and there was bound to be a website or publication that claimed that date was when the PS3 was due for release. In January, some experts were claiming it would be released in March. When March arrived and there was still no news, rumors became much more pessimistic and instead of dealing in months some analysts were moving their range into years. Spring 2006 was extremely popular for some time followed by a 12 month staggered release with Spring 2006 being the Japanese release, November 2006 the American release and early 2007 for Europe.
PS3 Release Date - 15th March Confirmation.
Ken Kutaragi confirmed that the PS3 would be released in November and that the release would be worldwide. Despite a comparatively firm release date that the public had been demanding, this news led to further rumors and speculation that the system would, in fact, still not be released until 2007 because of delays.
PS3 Release Date - Post 15th March Clarification.
The only clarification that was warranted with the release date was how a worldwide release would be attained. Traditionally, Sony has released their consoles to the Japanese market first followed by America and then Europe. While the release is being dubbed as simultaneous it is much more likely that there will be several days or weeks between market releases.
PS3 Release Data - Pre 15th March Rumors.
Due to the supply problems faced by Microsoft and the release of their XBox 360, there were questions raised about how many PS3s would be shipped when it was finally released. Again, speculation grew surrounding this point and the general consensus was that of around 1 million units for each market although a few skeptics believed this would be the worldwide figure and others believed there would be 7 million units worldwide.
