Don´t Forget to Put Out the Cat!

There are some very good ways to improve the safety of your house and keep it looking good during your absence. Here are some that should be considered.

Put pets in a shelter while you are gone. Pets left in the house can cause many problems. Cats or dogs can chew through electric cords and cause fires. They can also climb or jump on furniture and knock off lamps and other valuables. Some pets tend to destroy property as a payback for you having left them alone. They get accustomed to a routine and if that routine is broken, they get upset just like a child would. If they are in a shelter you can rest assured they will have plenty of food, water and exercise while you are away.

Turn off gas at main valve to avoid unexpected leaks.
Make sure all appliances are turned off. You might want to unplug your computer. This may prevent fire or the loss of the appliance or computer if lightening strikes or you have a power surge and you have no surge protectors installed. If the budget allows it, a very good surge protector can prevent a lot of replacement expense farther down the road.

Temporarily put a hold on your newspapers and mail or have a neighbor or family member pick it up for you. Newspapers scattered in the yard or drive or a mailbox full of mail is a sure indication that no one is at home.

Motion-sensor lights are another form of safety.
