Fifties Fashion Fads
|
Summary:
Fashion fads in the fifties varied often. From poodle skirts and the James Dean look, to bridal gowns made of Chantilly Lace, and prom gowns of pastel organdy with ruffles and lace, people enjoyed the clothing of the era. |
Details or Sample:
The fashions of the fifties were widely varied and a lot of fun. Included were two piece dresses with small collars, fitted blouses and full, pleated, knee high skirts. More casual dresses sported tied shoulder or halter straps, boned bodices and the popular circle skirts.
Shoulders were soft and wide, waists were corseted and full hips were all the style. Silhouettes were varied. These included a trim bodice and full, knee-length skirts. Short boxed blouses and jackets were twinned with pencil straight, tight skirts. There was one style that hid it all. That was the sacque dress and coat. These were fitted at the shoulders, and were full at the waist and hips. Many pregnancies were hidden for months beneath the sacques.
Evening wear of the era had a heart-shaped opaque, strapless bodice with a sheer nylon, organdy or nylon over-bodice. These dresses went to the extreme. They were either sleeveless or long sleeved.
Prom night gowns were always pastel in color. Pinks, blues, greens, mauves, were popular. These were usually made of nylon tulle and sported yards of trim, ruffles, lace and bows. Sweaters had long or three quarter sleeves and were often appliqued or beaded. Sweaters were definitely "in" thanks to sex symbol Marilyn Monroe.
