Nurburgring

It's 7:00am on wet July morning, in the Eifel mountains of south west Germany. Bleary eyed after the overnight drive from Calais, then navigating the web of backroads to the tiny village of Nurgburg, I pulled into the car park of petrol head Mecca.

I'd read the websites and wanted to see for myself. Using 110% of my German, I managed to determine that the circuit would be open in an hours time. At 8:14am, fuelled by caffeine and adrenaline I exited the pits onto the first lap. The car was a Toyota Supra. With 240bhp, 3.0 turbo and pretty good handling it seemed upto the job.

For many, the 'ring becomes a passion, an obsession even. Very soon I could see why. First of all, if you've ever done a track day you'll already know the sheer joy of throwing your car through the corners and gunning it down the straights without caravans, speed cameras or traffic jams is a joy all it's own. But with the 'ring there's more. A succession of quick laps on a 2-3 mile course can be exhilarating, here it is so much more. There's over 70 corners on the Nordshlieffe and each one is different. From the flat out yahoo Fuchsrohre taken north of 100mph to the famous banked karrusel, via miles of treacherous bends, bumps and dips, each one yielding it's own unique satisfaction when you get it right, and white knuckle fear when you get it wrong. The sensation of exiting the final corner, knowing you have survived another lap is sensational.
