Details or Sample:
I watched the Academy Awards. The best of the evening, for me, was Reese Witherspoon quoting June Carter Cash. When June was asked what she was doing, June would always respond: "I'm just trying to matter." I think that's a quote worth considering.
June Carter Cash wasn't a favorite of mine. What I knew about her had more to do with being the wife of Johnny Cash. I didn't know much about him, either. News about her usually alluded to her love for her family, love for their children, love for his children. It certainly matters that all their children hold her in high regard.
I think trying to matter does matter. The best way to matter is to take care of your family first. "First" means earthly first, after God, if it matters to you. Caring for your family first means that you keep the kids safe when possible, and that you always support their authority figures in school. If the teacher is wrong, you deal with the teacher privately but your child sees you in support of the teacher (of course, there are exceptions). You see that they absolutely learn to read, and read well, unless there is a learning disability. You see that they have a respect for adults. In the case of adults who deserve no respect, you keep the kids away. You know where the kids are, who they're with and you don't allow them to speak in a disrespectful way to you, their grandparents, aunts, uncles and teachers. You teach them that they get somewhere in life by learning life skills, reading first -- they should know that doing the most they can do, is the best they can do for themselves.
Then they can matter to others. That's where charity of the heart begins. You either have the skills to help others physically and/or emotionally, or you have the money to help others financially, or you are capable of all. Having the heart to do something matters. One way or the other, each of us must be "helpers" if we are to matter. A good thing to remember, though, is that we cannot help everyone.
When it comes to spouses, I don't know. Divorce is a reality. The children must still learn to learn. Dead-beat Dads-Moms - it matters that they be lawfully forced to contribute. There are laws in every state but they don't seem to matter.
It matters that every child molester pays with the remainder of his/her life. I support the death penalty but it doesn't matter to me whether it's life-in-prison or death -- it matters only that the opportunity is never there again. The one-time molestation of a child matters. We need judges to think it matters, too. Jessica's Law matters.
It matters that the ACLU defends NAMBLA (North American Man-Boy-Love Association). WHERE is the outrage!
It matters that I think there were WMD's in Iraq; it also matters that you think there were none.
It matters that some younger adults do not see the attacks on the USS Cole, our embassies, the first World Trade Tower attack, and so many other acts against the United States for what it is -- a movement to end our freedom and liberty -- to simply do away with us. That's my view. It matters that I can say this and be dismayed, and that you can disagree. No one here will cut your fingers off at the knuckles. Instead you can vote - that's all we can do, along with peaceful protest. You shouldn't vote twice though.
It matters that the opportunity to peacefully protest is never taken away. If your protest is not peaceful -- if it requires the police to put their life on the line to keep you in-line, then you should pay the city for your rude behavior and the time taken away from persons who desperately need the attention of our police and fire departments.
It matters that you do not burn my SUV (I don't have one, by the way). You can burn yours (Bobby Kennedy, listen up) but leave mine alone. It's legal. You shouldn't kill or hurt others in the name of Pro-Life or Pro-Abortion. Abortion matters, whichever side you are on.
It matters that we pay our taxes. I heard a news report yesterday that if everyone will just pay what he/she owes, the national debt will be eliminated. We need to get behind Congressman John Linder and Neal Boortz -- buy their book -- and adopt the Fair Tax. At least, it needs a fair chance. This is the only tax reform plan that we can just go out and buy and read the details. Everything else lives in some Congressman's head or House or Senate bill. That's a scary place to live for a good and honest idea. Anyway, what really matters is: with the Fair Tax or other comparable plans, we do away with the IRS, we pay "as we go" - it just makes so much sense. My apologies to the IRS and accountants -- certainly nothing personal here, but our current tax system is a really bad habit.
But I digress. If each of us mattered to only our own family, and raised children well-equipped to deal, responsibly, with the world, what a different world this would be. I think of it as "Trickle Down" love and respect. If the "Trickle Down" pattern is repeated by just 50% of our families, it will make a huge difference, and it will matter to the entire world.
