In 1302, the French prince, acting on orders of the Pope, took control of Florence. Dante was sentenced on charges of corruption and opposition to the church. He was exiled and was told if he returned, he would be executed by burning. He continued to pine throughout his life for his native city.
Dante continued to love Beatrice after her death, though it was a spiritual love. Around 1304, he published De Vulgari Eloquenta, an argument for writing poems and other works in Italian. Another book, IIConvivio, was published about the same time. It discusses grammar and styles of poetry.
When Dante was twelve, he"d been betrothed to Gemma Donati, the daughter of prominent Florentine parents. The couple was married in 1290, around the time of Beatrice"s death. They had four children; Giovanni, Pietro, Jacopo and Antonio. Despite his commitment to his family, Dante became inconsolable when Beatrice died. He began a bout of drinking and partying. Within two years, he"d come to grips with his grief and begun to study classical philosophy.
In 1313, Dante published, De Monarchia, (On Monarchy) in which he argued that the authority of the secular prince was not given to him by the Pope. Dante believed that the prince got his authority directly from God.
