Anyone who has ever tried to finish a craft that called for some painting on a leather surface, has probably learned the hard way about the challenges that one faces when trying to get the paint to adhere to the leather itself. Because the surface often varies in oil content and fiber structure, it´s hard to know just what method may be your best option. Not only that, but leather has a tendency to stretch, which adds another unwanted complication.

Knowing this, and being the creative miracle workers that we are, there are a few things that can be done to help out in this seemingly endless battle. From some simple preparatory tasks, through the painting itself and into the maintenance afterward, here are a few of the things I´ve managed to pick up along the way:


Stage One: Preparing the leather

If you want the paint to stick to the leather, you´ll have to remove any protective coatings that are present. This is because if the paint is unable to penetrate into the material, there is no way for it to adhere to the fibers, which will leave you with something less than desirable.

This is also true for smooth leather, or leather with a shiny surface. Remove the top layer by gently going over the areas in question with an emery cloth or very fine sandpaper.
