Many times when children go off to the school bus in the morning, parents let go responsibility for their child"s successful education, thinking the school will handle things. This isn"t necessarily the case. You are always the person in charge of your child"s education, and there are steps you can take to give your child the best possible school experience.
Late fall and early winter is the best time to assess your child"s status. You"re past the honeymoon period of the first six weeks, and still in plenty of time to have evaluations completed before the end of the year. But any time you feel your child isn"t getting what he needs, you may ask for an evaluation.
Federal law requires that every student receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education, also known as FAPE. How do you know what"s appropriate? First, you need to observe your child. Is she having a hard time with homework? Are there behavioral problems in school? Are there difficulties hearing the teacher or seeing the board?
If your answer is yes, then talk to the child"s teacher. If the teacher confirms that there are problems in class, you should request that the child be evaluated for services. Write a dated letter to the school, keep a copy, and call the principal if you haven"t gotten an answer in 10 days. The school is required to evaluate the child, at no cost to you.
