Raising a Socially Adept Child.
By Matt Jackson

Adults know the importance of social skills in forming friendships and generally getting along with other people but without the appropriate guidance your children may struggle in developing these same social abilities. However, where do you start in nurturing your child in such a manner that they will find it easy to converse with others on many different levels and subsequently form close bonds with those around them? This is a question that many parents find themselves contemplating but the process does not need to be as complicated as it may first seem.

Evaluating Your Child.

Before you can really begin to help your child develop social skills it is important that you evaluate his or her strengths and weaknesses. It may be that you have a child who is already conversant with people on a good level and you will only need to improve their skills and ensure they continue to improve. However, sometimes this isn"t the case and it is through no fault of the child or the parent. Judging your child"s social level will not just entail ascertaining how well they join in with other children but this will be part of it. You should be able to easily determine which areas your child excels in and which they do not.

Progression.

Once you have a list of weaknesses you should start with one area and work on that until it has improved to a reasonable level. The key to teaching your child to improve in any area is to show them what you mean, explain it to them and then try to provide them with the opportunity to try out their newfound skill. Always provide feedback and let your child know whether they were successful and if they weren"t then how they could improve but always try to be positive...
