When Baby doesnt Feel Well; Preparing for the Inevitable

Summary:
All parents eventually have to deal with a sick child. This 1020 word article discusses some products and strategies to make the inevitable a bit easier.
Details or Sample:
Let"s take a look at them, and at how to evaluate them:
THERMOMETER:( While older babies can use an in-ear thermometer, theyre not suggested for younger infants. They need rectal thermometers) 1. Check the directions for a model which is easy to operate. 2. Be sure to buy lots of extra caps... youll use one each time you use the thermometer, and certainly dont want to run out. 3) Check for the battery needs, and be sure theyre always on hand. 4) Check the directions: ear thermometers read differently than other ones. If youre going to think of calling your doctor, youll need to know whether the temperature youve taken falls within normal ranges.

HUMIDIFIER/VAPORIZER: These are great for babies (or adults) with head colds... the moisture in the air really helps! 1) Give some thought to getting a cold mist model... theres less of a chance for burns. 2) Look for a model which is relatively spill proof. 3) Many models have an automatic shutoff feature when the water runs low… a great safety feature! A model running on low water is a fire hazard. 4) Look for a model which has an ON light, so that youll know the status. 5) Always place it on a sturdy surface-- the floor is normally the best option. If not, be sure the table its on is sturdy and large enough.

BABY MEDICAL BOOK. Unless you have a medical background, this is absolutely vital. Well before baby is due, get a good book on babys symptoms. To determine which book you want, look up a typical baby ailment, like Croup. The book should list the symptoms, briefly explain what causes it (inflammation of the larynx-- kind of like infant laryngitis) and explain how to treat it. It should offer several options-- a steamy bathroom, cold night air, etc. And, probably most important, it should tell you when it is serious to demand immediate medical attention. This area should be highlighted and easy to find. Then look up Fever and Rash and see which book seems most appropriate. This book belongs in the babys room, in a prominent and safe place. Youll want to consult it on those days when youre not sure whether you have problem or not. Look for some sort of endorsement from the AMA.
