The BARF Diet: Will It Work for You (or Your Pet)?

Summary:
This article explains what the BARF diet is and why some encourage the diet while others discourage it.
Details or Sample:
Relax. Its not a new diet invented by Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan.

BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or more commonly, Bones And Raw Food- a diet for cats and dogs developed by Dr. Ian Billinghurst based on the premise that despite domestication, cats and dogs- having changed little in their physiology throughout evolution- cannot thrive on processed foods/kibble invented by the pet food industry within the last 100 years. A biologically appropriate diet is one that consists of raw whole foods similar to those eaten by wild ancestors. It is a diet of muscle meat, bone, fat, organ meat and vegetable materials (for dogs) and any other foods that will mimic what wild ancestors ate.

It"s a good theory considering its also the same principle that most modern zoos and zoologists concerned with preserving species of endangered animals tend to follow. Its a theory definitely not endorsed by pet food companies. Many veterinarians agree they could have benefited from some extra focus on animal nutrition during school. Advocates of the BARF diet contend that pet food companies take advantage of this fact by sending out reps and having seminars on dog and cat nutrition, then giving out incentives to veterinary hospitals to endorse their food.

If you want to feed your dog BARF, it means not feeding your dog cooked and/or processed food. A processed kibble diet is a diet based on cooked grains, and some say artificial grain based dog foods cause innumerable health problems. Dr. Billinghurst purports that not one animal on earth is adapted by evolution to eat a cooked food diet and many people who have pets with constant allergies find their relief in the BARF diet.
