Brand new cars equal success. Or so I thought after growing up in a used-car buying family. We never bought a brand new car when I was growing up, and after I entered the working world, I was determined to own one someday.

Turns out I didn't have to wait that long or work that hard for it. About a year after graduating from college and a year of saving any extra penny from my first job, I switched jobs and decided I was too young to need to scrimp and save that much. I bought a new computer, a new stereo and then I started eyeing the new cars.

Not wanting to be a complete idiot about it, I did some research on gas mileage and looked at consumer reports before settling on what kind of vehicle I was going to get. There are a lot of great sites online to check out new and used cars: NADA, Edmunds and Autobytel to name a few. Through it all, the vehicle that kept catching my eye was the Mazda Protege.
