The Lassie Connection

There are online pictures of the filming of the Lassie movie made last year, the one that was filmed in lreland and on the lsle of Man. Lassie is usually played by a male dog, l think, because they are bigger and have a more luxuriant coat. Actually three dogs were used to make the movie, but the animal on these pictures looked very familiar to me. He/she has the white blaze, the collar around the neck that looks bleached white, four white feet and a beautiful golden coat. Tipped ears and that
very sweet expression on its face. Yesterday a rumor that l had heard last summer was confirmed, that my dog and the movie Lassie are from the very same litter. Beyond the obvious family resemblance, my dog Poika and that Lassie have nothing in common.

l bought the puppy for less than $100 on the coldest day of the year. The litter of ten pups was born outdoors and they were living happily outdoors in thirty below temperatures. l think l got first pick of the litter, although Hollywood may have been there first to take the one with the widest blaze down the middle of the forehead. l didn't count the pups but they were tumbling over each other in playful glee. They were born on a working farm with cattle and the parents were used as herding
dogs. This is what l wanted. A healthy farm dog, not a puppy mill product, that would be good with horses.

Actually, l had already tried to adopt an adult dog through collie rescue. My dad alway told me that the proper place for animals is outdoors and dogs forced to live indoors are unhealthy and unhappy. l had to
fill out a form to get a collie and provide references and have a home visit. At first they were suspect, because l emphasized the potential adoptee's outdoor privileges. That was a no-no. The collies were supposed to be kept indoors and with the family. They had to interview my references and check my background. At length it was determined that l was a good person and l could have a dog, but by then l had lost interest in their mission.

And so l got Poika. Within a few days l realized l had the original Puppy from Hell.
