A Film Review - The Chronicles of Narnia

Summary:
Have you seen the Chronicles of Narnia yet? Before you head off to the movies, read the full review here.
Details or Sample:
Not having read the books by C.S. Lewis before I took my children to see this film was a bit of a disadvantage for them and an advantage for me. I was enthralled by this film; but, I don"t feel it"s a good flick for anyone to take young children to. My three year old was way too young for the film.

The Chronicles of Narnia is akin to the Lord of the Rings moreso than any Grimm"s fairy tale or Harry Potter book. Perhaps this is because C.S. Lewis and JRR Tolkien, LOTR"s author, were friends and colleagues at Oxford. C.S. Lewis was also deeply religious. He was a Christian and believed that the world could be made into a better place.

In this film, two brothers and two sisters of the Pevensie family, Sue, Lucy, Edmund and Peter are transported to a remote locale to escape the nightly Nazi air raids in their neck of the woods. They are lonely and sad. There is some friction between the siblings as well.

While living in the home of an eccentric professor, the children find themselves bored. Lucy, the youngest, fancies a game of hide-and-seek which takes her into a whole new world, the world that is Narnia.

Narnia is, literally, a winter wonderland. It"s beauty can not be hidden by the blanket of snow that the White Witch has imprisoned this beautiful land for neigh on 100 years. Mr. Tomnus, a faun, tells Lucy a bit about Narnia"s history. He drugs her and attempts to kidnap the child so as not to come under the White Witch"s fury.

Mr. Tomnus" soft heart prevails and he lets Lucy go home. Lucy returns to the wardrobe in the professor"s home and finds that no time has passed in her world. Her siblings didn"t even know she was missing. In fact, they don"t believe the child when she tells them where she has been.

Lucy becomes desperate to prove that Narnia is real so she takes a midnight trip back to the land. Edmund, who is quite the imp and has argued mightily with Peter, the eldest brother and family "caretaker", follows her into this land. Edmund falls into the path of the White Witch who tempts him with Turkish delight, a very sweet candy, and promises of glory. The Witch tells him he can rule over Narnia and be her heir if only he brings his brother and sisters back to her castle.

Edmund doesn"t know the White Witch is evil although we do. She wants to kill the children because of the prophecy. The prophecy, which Mr. Tomnus has already told Lucy, states that "two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve will overthrow the White Witch and bring peace to Narnia." The children are humans and thus the "sons of Adam" and "daughters of Eve" in the prophecy.
