The lands we now know as Iran and Iraq used to be the heartland of Persia—the seat of an ancient empire that ruled during the sixth century B.C. Led by King Cyrus II, the ancient Persians built an empire that encompassed Asia Minor and the seat where civilization first began, Mesopotamia. Persians themselves derived from a region called Fars in southern Iran.

Persian kings understood the necessity of transporting both armies and goods quickly and efficiently. For this reason, Persians built an excellent road system to connect various regions with one another. This network proved important in times of war, but it was also beneficial economically for trade purposes. It is thought their main road system led from Persepolis to Susa to Babylon to Opis to Arbela to Melitene to Comana to Gordium and finally to Sardis under the reign of Darius I. Many of the roads have not survived so it is impossible to gage how much more extensive it may have been. It is interesting to note, however, that even though these roads made travel faster, it still took Herodotus ninety days to travel from Sardis to Susa.
