Jingle Hell: Advice for the Overly Cynical at Christmas Time

Summary:
Not everyone loves Christmas. Here is a humorous approach to bringing out the best in all those Scrooges at Christmas time.
Details or Sample:
Even for those of us who like or love Christmas, this holiday is arriving earlier and earlier each year, and yes, it is twice as commercialized as it was when Charlie Brown complained on his Christmas special years ago. In fact, if you feel like you rather deck a face than a hall at this time of year, then you're probably one of the growing numbers of cynical, victimized-by-Christmas individuals. Is there still a chance for you during this season of hope? Probably not, but just in case your heart is still capable of growing smaller you may want to try some of these rejoicing little exercises.

To start, be sure to take a day and deliberately say, "Merry Christmas," to every single person you encounter. This is going to be tricky, because you'll need to make sure that you say it with as much sincerity as you can. If you need help with this, pretend in your mind that you're actually saying, "I hate Christmas." Make sure that you try this exercise when you're actually around people. No cheating.

Not in the mood to break out the garlands and ornaments? Try decorating your tree with empty beer cans, hot-glued together bottle caps, or something else that is meaningful to you. Just kidding. We know that your cynicism doesn't indicate how much you're attached alcohol! The point is to skip the Christmas element of the tree. Use black lights instead of multi-colored lights. If you're into food, hang cutlery on the tree. What about a tree with golf balls buried among its branches? It really won't take much to make that tree work for you.
