Details or Sample:
The Chicago Tribune recently announced its pick for the 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award. Canadian writer Margaret Atwood will be presented with this prestigious award on November 6, 2005 for a large body of work that is popular in both academic and mainstream circles. She is a renowned poet and novelist with a considerable amount of critical acclaim.

Atwood just recently published the Penelopiad within the last few months, but her earliest publication, Double Persephone, a collection of poems, dates back to 1961. Her work is too varied to describe easily. She is comedic as she is deadly serious. She writes realistic fiction, but has also dabbled in fantasy and science fiction to wide acclaim. She has written both historical and futuristic fiction. Her wit is sharp; her intellect is keen, and her sentiments are often surprising.

Some of her most memorable works are as follows:

Alias Grace. (1996) A historical crime novel about an early Canadian murderess. Atwood reconstructs the life of Grace and tries to understand the motives of a murderous life.

The Blind Assassin. (2000) Winner of the Booker Prize, this excellent novel set in the thirties blends reality with science fiction. A haunting story that weaves between the past and present, fantasy and reality it is one of her best novels by far.

Cat"s Eye. ( 1988) The trauma of childhood is presented through the eyes of Elaine. The novel weaves between past and present demonstrating how childhood forms the adult persona.
