Choosing a Preschool

Summary:
For may parents, the task of choosing a preschool becomes a real worry. I discuss some of the factors they should consider.
Details or Sample:
OK, take a deep breath…. And again…. And again. If we are to believe all we"ve been told, this is the single most important decision of your life. But remember: it"s preschool. You"re looking for a safe environment where your child can grow and learn, but the rest of his academic career does NOT ride on this one decision. Those fictional "permanent records" don"t start until at least Kindergarten.

That said, there are a lot of variables to consider. There are several types of schools, from Montessori (where children of all ages learn with and from each other) to Coops (where parents participate in the daily running of the school, and spend a day each month or so in the classroom assisting the teacher.) There is a wide variety of programs and philosophies… you"ll have to hunt around for one that you"re comfortable with and that fits your budget. Go to the phone book and online, and come up with a list of schools within a comfortable driving distance (even in rainy or snowy weather.) Make an appointment to come and see the school. Bring along a notebook; after one or two, you"ll forget which school offered what.

Here are some of the items you"ll want to consider:
SAFETY: Hands down, this is the most important. When you arrive, take note of how easy it is for you, a stranger, to enter the building without being stopped. Look at the classes you pass: are the doors open or closed? Notice who takes the kids to the bathroom, and who watches the class while that"s happening. Ask about fire drills. Find out how they handle dismissal: is the class dismissed at once, or is your child given to you. What"s their policy on someone else picking up your child—do they demand a written note and identification, or is a verbal warning enough. Only you can determine where your comfort zone is here, but safety should be your primary concern.
