Modern technology may finally solve a 75-year-old mystery. Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart set off in 1937 to become the first woman to fly around the world but vanished without a trace over the South Pacific. A newly enhanced photograph of the shoreline of Nikumaroro Island (then called Gardner Island), taken three months after Amelia disappeared, might actually show landing gear belonging to her type of plane. In July 2012, TIGHAR (pronounced “tiger” and standing for The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery) will conduct a submarine expedition of the area depicted in the photo. They believe that Amelia landed her Lockheed Electra safely on a reef of the island and lived for awhile as a castaway!
