In late 2011, selected Tim Hortons locations in eastern Canada tested a new way to for customers make purchases by using a QR code or txt message via their mobile devices. The system kept track of the number of coffees purchased, rewarding the customer with a free coffee for every nine purchased coffees. While it was only a trial, the program (or another like it) has the potential to eventually go chain-wide. UPDATE - the experiment saw only limited success and was discontinued.
