Mauritania is a resource-rich nation, home to an abundance of mineral wealth and a thriving fishing industry, and recent petroleum discoveries hold the promise of long-term export revenue. While the nation exports its commodities throughout the world, Asian nations led by China have become some of Mauritania´s best customers, providing the impoverished nation with much-needed revenue. Mauritania also derives revenue from licensing acquisition rights to its resources and though this provides a valuable revenue stream for the country, detractors of a recent deal with a Chinese fishing company fear that the license´s generous terms will lead to overexploitation of the coastline´s fish, eventually ending Mauritania´s status as a major exporter.
