Maria Montessori: Doctor and Educator

Maria observed the children in their academic endeavors and at play. She came to the conclusion that children learn from their environment. She put methods of teaching into effect that were formulated to help children learn on their own. She showed the children under her care that they didn"t need a disciplinarian watching them to gain knowledge of the world. It was Maria"s opinion that if children were respected and the right methods were used, that the children would teach themselves. Word of Maria"s teaching methods spread rapidly throughout Italy, and then Europe. It wasn"t long until people began to visit the Casa de Bambini to take note of her teaching technique. Other schools began springing up across the continent, using Maria"s ideas. Maria took advantage of the golden opportunity that had presented itself. She wrote and published a book titled, Il Metodo, and began traveling across Europe giving lectures and training teachers to use her teaching technique. In 1912, she traveled to the United States. It wasn"t long until schools were established that adapted Maria"s teaching methods.
