Thanksgiving is over, the vines are asleep in the vineyard, and we are still eating the leftovers from the Turkey Day Diner as we get ready for the Christmas and New Years season that each of us celebrate in our own special way. Hanukkah is the Jewish celebration of a miracle where a one days worth of oil burned in the Temple for eight days. Christmas is the Christian celebration of the birth of the Christ child and is spent by going to church, giving gifts, and sharing a day with their families. Kwanzaa, which means First Fruits, is based on ancient African harvest festivals and celebrates ideals such as family life and unity. This spiritual holiday is celebrated from December 26 to January 1. Chinese New Year Many Chinese children dress in new clothes to celebrate the Chinese New Year. People carry lanterns and join in a huge parade led by a silk dragon, the symbol of strength. These differences that we celebrate are what makes us all Americans. A country of many cultures, races, and ethnic backgrounds. We are the only country that has this in common among our people. I hope during this festive season we remember those of us that cant be with us during the holiday season, our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters that are in foreign lands and have the very important job of protecting the freedoms that we all enjoy. Remember them in your prayers and thoughts as I know they will be thinking of you where ever they are.
