President Obama unveiled his proposed Homestar Program on Tuesday. Under the program, homeowners are eligible for instant vendor and manufacturer rebates in return for using the most energy efficient building supplies on the market, most of which are produced in the United States. There are different categories of rebates available, contingent upon how much of an effort a homeowner invests in reducing their household energy consumption, the largest rebates going to those who undertake a retrofit of their home that results in a reduction of energy used by at least 20%. If the program is passed, the projected cost is $6 billion. But the White House maintains that tens of thousands of jobs will be created and the proposal has the support of many in the home building and building supplies industries.
