What the FDIC Website Tells Savers
The Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation (FDIC) is a government agency insuring depositors in most banks for up to $100,000 or more. This article will point you in the right direction for knowing more about what the "or more" means, valuable information if you´re a saver. What the FDIC Website Tells Savers By Rochelle Cashdan The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, better known as the FDIC, insures bank deposits up to $100,00 for an individual non-retirement account ($250,00 for an IRA account) and even more for joint accounts and living trust accounts. I’ll be giving some important details here, but the best source of information is the FDIC itself. On its website, you’ll find clear explanations of what you and it can do. As I have an individual account, I’ll explain from that perspective. The rules are different for people with a joint account. The FDIC is guaranteeing up to $100,000 I have on deposit at each bank where I maintain a non-retirement account. Deposits in an IRA account are guaranteed separately for up to $250,000. If you have a lot of cash savings, remember that the FDIC can insure more than one bank account for you. This is one technique used for doing an end run around the $100,000 limit. Another way, if you are saving money that will eventually go to your children, is to open a revocable living trust at your bank. First, you will need to set up the revocable living trust, not terribly complicated once you find a living trust form online and have a lawyer friend look it over for you. This kind of trust, with you as the grantor and trustee, has the advantage of being easily changed or even cancelled. You’ll need to list your beneficiaries and assets and append the lists to your witnessed, dated trust form. Be sure to consider your beneficiary selections carefully. After that, request a certification of trust form from your bank, fill it out and mail, fax, or email it in, depending on the procedure your bank follows. Why go to the trouble of setting up a revocable living trust? There are several estate planning advantages, but what is relevant here is that the FDIC will guarantee $100,000 for each beneficiary named in your trust in addition to guaranteeing up to $100,000 in your single account. That’s jargon for your personal bank account
